Domestic summer tourism was clearly quieter than the previous year. The number of overnight stays fell to a lower level than the previous year in almost all provinces. There were clearly more foreign tourists staying than last summer.
Finns’ enthusiasm for domestic tourism has subsided from the peak readings of the previous summer.
When the corona restrictions for traveling abroad have practically been removed, Finnish travelers have returned to their pre-corona habits.
The number of overnight stays fell to a lower level than the previous year in almost all provinces. Only in Uusimaa and Päijät-Hämee were there more domestic overnight stays than the year before.
Domestic tourists’ overnight stays were 16% less than in July 2021.
2.69 million overnight days were recorded for domestic tourists and 0.57 million days for foreigners in July 2022.
The number of overnight stays by foreigners was triple compared to the previous summer. The largest groups of tourists were from Sweden, Germany and the United States.
The total number of overnight stays in July 2022 was at the same level as in July 2019 before the corona pandemic. The figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s accommodation statistics.
The opera festival raised hotel prices
The average price of a hotel room in Finland in July was 118 euros, while a year earlier it was 106 euros.
The most expensive hotel rooms were in Etelä Savo. Due to the demand caused by the Savonlinna Opera Festival, the average hotel stay cost as much as 167 euros.
