In the Birdlife competition, the bird towers in Ostrobothnia were lucky this time. The most species were observed in Kristiinankaupunki’s Siipy, and in Kokkola’s Vattaja, a species that was not seen from any other tower.
In the Battle of the Towers organized by Birdlife, a rare American blackbird was spotted from Kokkola’s Vattaja bird tower.
The species is rare in Finland, and this time it was not observed in any of the other bird towers that participated in the Battle of the Towers.
98 species of birds were observed in Vattata, among which was also the bald eagle. There were sightings of the bald eagle in the battle of the towers in only three other towers in Finland.
Vattaja’s tower placed eleventh in the competition when measuring the number of species observed. The most, more than a hundred species, were seen in Kristiinankaupunki’s Siipy.
96 different bird species were observed in the Harjukari tower in Kokkola’s Marinkais.
More than 300 bird towers around the country participated in the event organized by Birdlife. More than 3,000 people visited them.
During the competition, the teams observe or try to see or hear as many species of birds as possible in eight hours. The day also includes guiding the public.
This year, the teams’ participation fees support the transmitter monitoring of golden eagles.
The Battle of the Towers takes place every year at the beginning of May.
