There is a new living trend in the maritime forests: inland lakes. For Outi Patola’s family from Pori, there is no solution to the odor nuisance caused by birds and excrement bombing on the side of the Natura area.
The family hopes that the birds will decide to move elsewhere. There doesn’t seem to be any other solution to the problem, because the plot of the house borders the Natura area.
On summer days, you can’t be in the yard because of the rough weather.
– Could the bird’s name be changed to lake woodpecker, Outi Patola asks.
There is still a hint of humor left, even if the situation is not laughing.
You can evict from your own plot
However, there is no quick solution. Since cormorants protected by the Nature Conservation Act nest in the Natura area, nesting peace must be given to all birds.
You can try to evict sea otters from your property with various deterrents that do no harm: tarps, CDs and repellents.
– They work differently, says Westerman.
Outi Patola knows that ordinary harassment does not help. The family has tried to make noise and play music on the plot, but the brave cormorants are looking for nesting needs from the beach plots.
– They have tried to comfort us that cormorants are a mobile species. They may leave, but in reality the situation will only get worse, says Patola.
The white-tailed eagle eats eggs and chicks
From the Ely Center’s point of view, the most important thing would be to accurately document the damage caused by maritime forests. A free assessment of the need for a permit can determine whether it is possible to get an exemption permit for evicting maritime forests.
On the other hand, even a layman can guess the end result: because of Natura, Enäjärvi cannot get an exception permit.
The problems caused by maritime forests are also increasing elsewhere inland, as birds are currently moving there from the outer archipelago of the sea.
– One reason is the recovery of the sea eagle population. Sea eagles eat eggs, chicks and even adult cormorants that move inland to safety, says Maria Westerman.
Getting exception permits for disturbance in the archipelago also drives inland.
– If there are cormorants nesting on the cottage island, which, for example, destroy the trees, you can get an exception permit to evict them on a case-by-case basis, if it is not a Natura area, says Westerman.
A law on significant damages is being prepared
Can compensation be obtained for harm caused by maritime forests?
The cormorant is a protected species. The Parliament required that the Government immediately investigate the damage caused to commercial fishing and prepare a separate government proposal on the subsidy system, if the investigation shows that significant damage is caused.
– A possible regulatory change regarding compensation would be included in the act on damages caused by protected species, says Suvantola.
The island’s trees cannot withstand the nests
– Nest calculations can only be done at the beginning of June, because now some cormorants are just nesting, some are just flying in the area.
The trees on the islands that were originally conquered by the cormorants can no longer support the nests.
– Then the nesting can move completely, but the cormorant can also make its nest on land.
