The gray seal pup received a car ride from the rescue agency to Kemi’s Inner Harbor, where it was taken to a molting spot on the beach.
A gray seal pup wandered on the road leading to Metsä Fibre’s new pulp mill in Kemi on Thursday evening.
Several bystanders hurriedly got the six off the roadway, but the new place was not very safe either. The train line to the factory runs next to the busy highway.
Mehtonen noticed a seal cub in the middle of the highway when he came home from work and immediately started to secure its passage.
– Kuut’s pace was slowing down all the time, but it still continued to fire against us, describes Mehtonen.
In a cardboard box towards the beach
When the rescue service of Lapland came to the scene, the speed of the six had already congealed right next to the railway tracks. The firemen wrapped the cube in a red blanket and got it boiled in a cardboard box, which was lifted into the trunk of the car. This is how the chick’s journey towards open water began.
– Vähähaara, which is the nearest open water place, is at least half a kilometer away, estimates Heinonen.
According to him, the rescue service is usually called when Kuutti is floundering on the beach and can’t get back into the water, but this boy was far from the shoreline and the water.
– I would have been aiming for a summer job at the factory, laughs Heinonen.
