Jani Tolin painted a mural depicting Vesa-Matti Loir on a Helsinki terrace – the image comes from a cult album, the method of making speaks volumes

According to the artist, the mural painted on the terrace of the restaurant is a tribute to the person with whom he did \”all kinds of fun\” in the past years.

The mural depicting Vesa-Matti Loir is located on the terrace of restaurant Siltanen in Kallio, Helsinki.

According to Tolin, the idea for the mural was born already on the day of Loir’s death, when he sketched the first version of the painting.

– I actually made a sketch of the album cover shortly after Vesku’s death. A little later I composed it as a model on the wall of the restaurant Ääniwalli, and I put the picture on my social media with the accompanying words \”this could be true\ says Tolin.

After that, according to Tolin, things took off, and soon the idea was found to put the painting on Siltanen’s wall.

Tolin says that he is especially a fan of Loir’s 4 20 album and the song Itkevä hilu found on it. For him, the album’s starting point and method of making it represent art in its purest form.

– The text on the inside cover tells a lot about the creation process of the album. According to it, \”this record was born spontaneously out of friendship, it was not made for commercial reasons. We went to the studio at night and trusted the feeling.\”

Jani Tolin says that the painting was created in just over four hours. The original cover of the 4 20 album was designed by musician-producer Mikko Kuoppamäki.

– In the years 2009–2010, we had some contact, the three of us had all kinds of fun.

For \”diplomatic and legal\” reasons, he does not want to reveal in more detail what kind of trouble the trio has been up to. Tolin advises you to get to know his work, which can be found in the sale collection of a Helsinki gallery, whose name mentions Loiri.

In Galleria Bronda’s collection, there is Tolin’s work called _Smoking DMT with Vesa-Matti_, which partly explains the matter. DMT is a brain neurotransmitter produced by many plants and animals. DMT is also used as a psychedelic drug.

Support for the monument

According to Tolin, the work was created on the wall of Siltanen’s terrace rather effortlessly and in excellent conditions. The entire painting job only took about four hours.

– It was done with the help of a projector, so technically it wasn’t terribly creative work.

Tolin thinks the idea of erecting an official memorial to the Loire is excellent. According to him, the now completed mural and a possible street, hill or park are in no way mutually exclusive.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iltalehti also reported on the Loiri mural made by Tolin.
