The University of Oulu and Natural Resources Center are researching the use of flood and meltwater in the summer irrigation of fields. The sub-irrigation model based on drainage ditches is being tested at Ruukki’s research fields.
The diversion of melt water to the fields’ storage basin has already started in Ruukki, where the aim is to utilize the flood waters for summer irrigation of the fields.
It is a study by the University of Oulu and the Natural Resources Center, which is carried out during the spring and summer at Ruukki’s research fields. During the summer, we will study how the ditches can be used in sub-irrigation of the fields, and how effective the model would be from the farmer’s point of view.
Irrigation uses water that naturally flows into the storage basin, which can be directed to the fields with the help of automation and drainage ditches. In this way, the farmer would be able to adapt to the drought and improve the groundwater situation in the field area if necessary.
