Lahti’s ice rink is used not only by the SC league team Pelicans, but also by junior teams, figure skaters and ringette players.

Lahti began to find out where the city could build a new sports hall. There are currently two investment location options. There are no decisions yet regarding the construction and financing of the hall.

In Lahti, the civil service working group has outlined the locations of the new multipurpose hall that may be built.

At the moment, the options are the area of the Sports Center, i.e. the site of the current ice rink or the parking area of the large hall. Another option is the Mytäjäinen crossing area next to the train tracks.

The discussion about the need for a new rink has intensified in certain circles, when the ice hockey team Pelicans made it to the Finnish championship final after an 11-year break and plays its games in the 50-year-old ice rink, which attracts more than 4,400 spectators.

The multipurpose hall would have facilities for several sports. The public has at least talked about the new facilities for basketball.

According to Alho, the civil service working group will bring more detailed presentations to the table in May.

The map shows the possible locations for the new large ice rink in the parking lot of the Lahti sports center or in the intersection area of Mytäjäinen.
In the map exercises of the city of Lahti, two possible locations for the new ice rink were found.

Financing and construction decision still open

No decision has been made on the construction of Lahti’s multipurpose hall. In the past, it has also been investigated whether a new swimming hall could also be connected to the hall.

The financing of the hall has not been clarified very far either. According to Alho, it is clear that in addition to city funding, private funding is needed.

Lahti also makes a comprehensive report on the construction of sports facilities.
