A highly endangered bark beetle, the stenographer, was found in Kuhmo – the last time the species was spotted in Finland was 20 years ago

The dark brown insect is photographed very close up.
Metsähallitus describes the Kuhmo sighting of the stenographer as a pleasant surprise.

The pika is an old-growth species that disappeared from almost all of Finland during the last century. Now it has been found to still be present in the Elimyssalo Natura area.

Another surprising insect discovery has been made in Kuhmo.

The species survey of the Beetles Life project of Metsähallitus Nature Services found that the bark beetle, the stencil beetle (Ips sexdentatus), which is classified as critically endangered, still occurs in the Elimyssalo Nature Reserve in Kuhmo.

An old-growth forest species that disappeared from almost the entire country during the last century was found in the project’s restoration burn. The last time the species was recorded in Finland was 20 years ago.

In the first half of the 20th century, stenographers were still present in almost all of Finland, but declined very drastically after that. The species lives especially under the bark of stout dead pines and in dead pines in forest fire areas.

According to Metsähallitus, the insect species survey provides valuable information about endangered and watchful species. Based on new occurrence and monitoring data, species can be protected more effectively than before, for example with targeted restoration fires.

In the previous species mapping of the project, fly species were found in Kuhmo that had not been observed in Finland before.
