Edge miller, petcele and children’s snow shovel – these are the tools to combat the “field manager’s special” in hockey finals

The ice machine makes ice in the Lahti ice rink.
The Isku Arena ice machine in Lahti uses hundreds of litres of water in a single run.

The ice at Lahti Ice Hall will not pale in comparison to the new Tampere Arena, the rink masters assure.

The figure skaters’ morning training session of almost an hour has come to an end in Lahti’s ice rink and the ice-skating machine is rolling out.

This time there is time to go slow, as the next people on the ice don’t immediately rush in.

– A single run uses around 300-400 litres of water, depending on the speed.

According to him, the other most important tools for ice management are the edge cutter and the petkele.

The edges are smoothed with an edge cutter, and the hardest icicles are removed from the edges with a pick.

– A children’s snow shovel is also good when patching grooves. We use a shovel to hit the groove and then stick it in the ice, Kantola describes.

How can we be sure that the puck final will not be decided by the so-called \”court master’s special\ i.e. the puck bounces off an exceptional ice cube in front of the goal or even into the goal?

– Fix the edges for the rodent and hide the worst ice blocks. But in the third period, for example, they have already accumulated for sure, and if the puck comes in the right position, it can bounce anywhere, it’s just a game of luck, Kantola smiles.

According to the field master, Lahti’s old ice machines do not pale in comparison to the fresh equipment of Tampere’s brand new hall.

– The ice surface here is in just as good condition, if not even better, acknowledges Kantola.
