Daisy Edgar-Jones was brilliant in the Normal People series, but even she can’t save Suo villi laulu movie – Yle met the star

British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones visited Lapland to marvel at the northern lights as a little girl. The TV series Normal people made him a star, although he was not popular in real life due to the corona restrictions.

And we want journalists to stay on this topic. The journalists have been informed in advance that Edgar-Jones will not answer questions about the sex scenes of the TV series _Normaaleja utsata_ (why should they be asked about them?). The BBC’s sensual series made Edgar-Jones a star in Britain under corona restrictions.

The actor also does not answer political or personal questions, journalists have been advised.

He is talking about the movie _Suon villi laulu_. It’s Edgar-Jones’ first feature film, and he plays the lead role as a young woman named Kya, who lives in the rough and is at the mercy of nature. Early Kya is played by a child actor in the film. In the novel and the film, the community calls the character a scoundrel. This grows into a recluse who is afraid of people, stays outside the community, and has a strong relationship with nature and animals.

– I grew up in London, so the marshlands of New Orleans were a completely different environment for me. It was easier as an actor to get into the character and world of Kya when I actually saw alligators and dragonflies and we filmed in the heat instead of acting out the scenes based on my imagination in front of a green screen, says Edgar-Jones in an interview with Yle.

Isolation started to feel familiar

Expectations for the movie _Suo villi laulu_ are high. The highly popular novel is a story of growth, a murder mystery and a powerful description of nature.

However, according to Edgar-Jones, the actor has a lot of grip in the lead role.

– Kya is a really enigmatic and complex person, he sums up.

In addition, Edgar-Jones found the story itself fascinating. He read Owen’s novel for the audition amid restrictions due to the corona pandemic.

– I read the novel specifically from the point of view of how I could make Kya a living character. Kya’s isolation suddenly felt familiar because we were living in the middle of corona restrictions, says Edgar-Jones.

The magic of Lapland

Daisy Edgar-Jones grew up in Muswell Hills, North London. The parents are in the TV industry. The mother is a hairdresser and the father is the channel director of the entertainment giant Sky (Sky Arts).

My childhood memories include a trip to Lapland. Together with her father, Daisy put money aside in a piggy bank, and one day it was broken.

– We saved money for years. I’ve always loved snow. We decided to go see the northern lights in Finland and we saw them. It was magical. I was really small then. I want to return to Lapland one day, says Edgar-Jones.

The trip, which started in Rovaniemi, also included dog sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating.

– It was a real active holiday, Edgar-Jones says with a smile.

Ordinary people made Daisy Edgar-Jones a star. It was the BBC’s most streamed series in the corona year 2020.

The road to becoming an actress started early. Edgar-Jones got his first film role at the age of 15, but the film never ended up in production. The student went around the auditions, because the career choice was clear. Edgar-Jones wanted to be an actor.

The future film actress went to a private girls’ school and continued from there to high school for expressive arts. He trained in acting at the National Youth Theatre. The young acting debut got small roles in various productions, and just before the corona pandemic, Edgar-Jones was involved in the play _Albion_ at the Almeida Theater in London. The Guardian’s critic found him charming in the play.

The career really started only from the TV series Normal People It blew the bank.

– It changed my life in every way. The series was my theater school and university. I had just turned 21.

When society was closed due to corona restrictions, people focused on watching streaming services. The Normal People series became a phenomenon. It spoke to the people with its courage and uninhibitedness. It became the BBC’s most streamed series of 2020, while also making Edgar-Jones an overnight star.

– I never felt like a star live, because people were able to at home due to the corona restrictions. We were all on Zoom. The phenomenon spread online, and I heard about it from there, Edgar-Jones sums up.

Director Wes Anderson is interesting

Daisy Edgar-Jones can expect a successful acting career in the film and TV industry if she manages to find good roles for herself with interesting directors. That requires a skilled agent.

– Making the scene is a small part of the final film. It all depends on how the cinematographer decides to film you, and the director directs. I love it. I want to continue making films and TV drama with filmmakers I’m inspired by.

Edgar-Jones says “gosh” when asked who these people are. The list is long.

Gerwig was nominated for an Oscar for the drama comedy _Lady Bird (_(2017)) and Anderson is known for the film _The Grand Budapest Hotel_ (2014).

– Even if you don’t know whose film you are watching, you will recognize these directors by their special style, says Edgar-Jones.
