Spring floods in Ostrobothnia to be lower than normal this year

The ice piles up near the Kolki bridge on Kyrönjoki in Merikaarro.
Ice accumulated on Tuesday on the Kyrön River in Merikaarro, near the Kolk bridge. In the coming days, the Environment Agency plans to install game cameras on the Kyrön River to monitor the ice dams.

Peak flooding is forecast for coastal rivers already for the end of the week, and for southern Ostrobothnia for the weekend. Game cameras will be on the lookout for possible ice storms. In Kalajoki, ice is being cut.

Spring floods are expected to be lower than normal this year. Although snowmelt has progressed slowly, river flows in the lowland rivers are already increasing.

Peak flooding is expected in rivers along the coast of Ostrobothnia as early as Thursday or Friday and in southern Ostrobothnia by the weekend on Saturday. In Central Ostrobothnia, peak flows will not occur until the end of next week.

According to the South Ostrobothnia Environment Centre, a lower-than-normal flood will occur if precipitation levels remain stable and ice dams do not suddenly raise water levels.

In Liinaamaa, Lapuanjoki’s flood line was crossed already on Tuesday night.

A flood is expected in Kalajoki in the last week of April. Ice sawing has started in Nivala, Kalajoki\n to avoid ice dams and sawing in Alavieska in the afternoon.

Game cameras monitor for ice dams

According to Haukilehto, the melting of the ice is monitored with game cameras in the worst places of Kyrönjoki, i.e. Isonkyrö Pukkilansaari and at the Skatila and Kolki bridges.

The cameras will be installed in the next few days and will be moved according to the movements of the ice dams.

– Of course, cross-country tours are also done and the situation is monitored, Haukilehto says.

The floodgates have already been melted and tested. For now, however, it seems that there will be no need to release water to the fields.

In Perhonjoki, the snow melt has been prepared for by lowering the water level of artificial lakes. For example, the surface of Patana artificial lake has been lowered by about 4.5 m.

Recently, water has been run over the river ice from the Kaitfors power plant in order to increase the melting of the ice in the lower part of Perhonjoki with the help of dark water.
