The National Museum will close its doors to the public in October 2023.
The National Museum remains closed to the public for 2–3 years. In addition to the renovation of the museum’s historic main building, construction of the museum’s extension will begin on the site. The expansion part is scheduled to open to the public in the spring of 2027.
The target budget for the largest construction project in the National Museum’s more than one hundred year history is 55 million euros. The extension part was designed by JKMM architects, known for the Amos Rex art museum and Tanssi talo in Helsinki, among others.
The expansion part is mainly located underground, and it resembles the pavilion rising in the courtyard park.
