The accommodation sector is growing in the wake of the corona virus – almost half the number of overnight stays in Rovaniemi compared to last year in January-February

Sales in the accommodation sector have clearly increased since last year. According to Statistics Finland, there were 22 percent more overnight stays in registered accommodation establishments in Lapland in January-February than last year.

The accommodation sales of registered accommodation establishments in Rovaniemi have grown at the beginning of the year by as much as 50 percent more than last year, according to the latest tourism statistics of the Statistics Finland.

Enontekiö and Inari also had high growth percentages at the beginning of the year.

Of Lapland’s municipalities with statistics, only Salla had fewer overnight stays than last year. Growth was the slowest in Kemijärvi and Kolar.

The occupancy rate of accommodation establishments in all of Lapland was 68 percent in January-February, which is 12.5 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

The highest occupancy rates were in Rovaniemi and Kittilä, where the occupancy rate of registered accommodation establishments was over 80 percent.

Kemijärvi, on the other hand, had clearly the lowest occupancy rates in accommodation establishments. On average, less than 40 percent of the rooms of accommodation establishments registered there were occupied in January-February.

Salla was the only municipality in Lapland monitored by Statistics Finland, where the occupancy rate of rooms decreased in the beginning of the year compared to last year.
