Fazer wants to introduce new, attractive rye products to the market. The change negotiations concern 218 employees at the Lahden bakery.

Fazer is planning to build a new rye bread line at the Lahden bakery. The company says that the aim is to grow and strengthen its product range by introducing new, attractive and trendy rye products to the market. With this investment, Fazer aims to strengthen its position in the Finnish bread market.

As a result of the planned changes, Fazer will start negotiations on the changes. A total of 218 employees and part of the staff of Fazer Leipomot oy’s bakery in Lahti are covered by the change negotiations. The negotiations may lead to the termination of up to 54 employment contracts.

– Automation has moved on, and the new line is energy efficient. Its introduction would reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by up to a third,” says Bergholm.

Although jobs may be cut, the investment would create several new job opportunities at the same time. If the employer and employee could come to an agreement on this, the number of layoffs would decrease.

Possible reductions are planned to be implemented in stages during the years 2023–2025. The scope of the negotiations does not include senior officials or the staff of the gluten-free bakery in Lahti.

Bergholm says that the company has not yet made an investment decision. He also does not say at this stage the potential value of the investment.
