In Lapland, the river ice is measured again – the thickness of the steel ice indicates whether it is necessary to resort to sawing, and whether there is a risk of ice dams in the spring

The ice has packed in front of Rovaniemi
In 2020, ice accumulated in Kemijoki near the core of Rovaniemi.

Lapland’s ely center will measure the ice thickness in Lapland’s largest natural rivers this and next week. Measurements are made from Simojoki all the way to Ivalojoki.

Lapland’s ely center will measure the ice thickness in Lapland’s largest natural rivers this and next week. Measurements are made from Simojoki all the way to Ivalojoki, and they determine the thickness of the steel ice.

With the help of measurement data, the ely center evaluates both the need for ice cutting along the rivers and the risk of ice dams forming later in the spring.

According to the Ely Center’s preliminary assessment, the ice in Lapland is relatively thin, but an accurate picture will only be available after the measurements are completed in a couple of weeks.

In recent years, ice has been cut in Lapland usually only in the Tornionjoki mouth areas.
