The new 300-meter-long channel connects the Simonkylä and Onkalonperä waterways of Simojoki.
Archipelago tourism in the region is being developed in Simo. During the weekend and the beginning of the week, a new 1.7 meter deep waterway has been dredged between Simonkylä and Onkalonperä.
Thanks to the fairway, boats can get around the Simojokisuu archipelago better.
It is a joint project of the Simonkylä village association, the ELY center and the municipality. The active village association has taken the lead in the project and dredging the route is an essential part of the development of the entire area.
– This has been a dream for years and we are developing the area all the time. There are already sheds in the archipelago and the fairway is also marked in the summer. We hope for plenty of boaters, kayakers and surfers in the area, for example.
It is hoped that the dredging of the route will also benefit the fish stock in the area.
– I believe that fish also like to swim when there is a little more water. And the water smells, so the fish recognize the river water and know how to get up into the Simojoki better, hopes Junes.
