An increase in the Sámi parliament’s cultural budget – years of struggle behind it

The Sámi community has been waiting for a long time for us to get more resources for Sámi-language cultural work and art life, says Pirita Näkkäläjärvi, chairperson of the culture board of the Sámi assemblies.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted a cultural appropriation of 236,000 euros to the Sámi assemblies. There is an increase of 57,000 euros compared to previous years.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted a total of 236,000 euros for the promotion of Sámi-speaking culture, the support of Nordic Sámi organizations and the maintenance of Utsjoki’s Sámi church shelters. The increase compared to previous years is 57,000 euros.

The funding allocation will be decided in the middle of the month

The distribution of the allocation will be decided by the cultural committee under the Sámi Assembly’s board on 16-17. February. Decisions will be announced by the end of February.
