The Kokkola Museum has added hundreds of new works of art to its collection in a short space of time. Many of them are now in storage.
Now the museum announces a new donation that will add around 500 new works to its collection of marginal art.
The artworks include around 500 works of historical religious, naïve, outsider and ethnic art. The collection includes paintings, drawings, some stone sculptures and 100 small woodcarvings.
The ethnic and vernacular religious works in the Mertin collection are a new departure for the museum. The works now received will form an art collection bearing the donor’s name.
He summarizes that K.H. After the latest addition, Renlund’s collection of marginal art is Scandinavia’s most important outsider genre collection and comprises around 1200 works.
– The collection is unique! In addition to that, a large collection of Finnish ITE art classified as outsider art has been deposited with us.
Showrooms on the wish list
A small exhibition will be put together at Roos’ house for the summer about the theme and especially about the most recent donation. In the summer, the works can also be seen in an exhibition put together by the National Museum.
K. H. However, Renlund’s vast collection of more than a thousand works belonging to marginal art is largely located in storage. The museum director regrets that the town does not have the necessary exhibition spaces. The situation should have improved years ago.
– Getting suitable exhibition spaces has been on the agenda for over ten years. However, the projects have failed or been delayed.
In 2009, Kokkola’s city council decided that exhibition spaces would be built for the museum, which was celebrating its 100th anniversary at the time. However, the project remained.
The museum director envisions that art could be a tourist asset for the city.
– In my opinion, marginal art is a real attraction factor, but it requires appropriate spaces. With this content, the museum is targeting domestic and international customers. This opportunity should not be wasted now, advises Ahmas.
