Negotiations between Wasalandia’s backer and the city “on the rocks” – Graffitilandia suddenly says its operations are in jeopardy

The huge girl-themed graffiti painted by Salla Ikonen have been the most popular works at Wasa Graffitilandia

Wasa Graffitilandia has recently announced its plans for next summer. Now the cultural operator is hinting on Facebook that it may close as early as tomorrow, Saturday. Local operators are tight-lipped about the future.

A surprising announcement appeared on Wasa Graffitilandia’s Facebook page on Friday:

*”… A few days ago we were in full swing planning the summer and now here we are. More information will be released when we have definite information. However, we wanted to let you know that tomorrow may indeed be the last day to visit us. “*

The art exhibition in the former Wasalandia amusement park has been both popular and award-winning. The Vaasa Street Culture Foundation, which runs Graffiti Land, has recently announced its plans for the future and a grant of more than €100 000 from the Kone Foundation.

The premises of Wasalandia are owned by Puuharympa, whose tenant Graffitilandia has been operating. The Puuha group is a tenant of the city of Vaasa, which has been trying to get out of its expensive lease for years.

The city and the Puuha group have been negotiating the termination of the lease since the end of Wasalandia, i.e. since 2015. The lease would continue until 2037.

Towards the end of last year, Top Camping’s situation was also included in the negotiations. Top Camping is a campsite owned by Puuha Group near Wasalandia. The Puuha group also has a lease agreement with the city for the campsite plot. It ended at the turn of the year and the continuation of the campsite has been uncertain.

The fate of the area may soon be decided

– We have Tropiclandia there, which we own along with the plots, and the city of Vaasa has operated there for a couple of hundred years. I believe that everyone works for the best of the region, Järvenpää states.

The city of Vaasa has already renewed the plan of the Wasalandia area for the construction of apartment buildings.
