WWF: Finland sets record for dam removal

More than 138 dams were removed or bypassed in Finland. France came next with 128 barrier removals.

A record number of migratory waterways were demolished in Europe last year. Finland had the highest number of removals, says the environmental organisation WWF.

This information is based on the Dam Removal Europe 2024 report published today, Thursday.

In total, more than 500 obstacles were removed or bypassed. Of these, 138 were located in Finland. France came second with 128 barriers removed.

A record number of hiking barriers is in line with the EU Restoration Regulation’s target will restore at least 25,000 kilometers of stream water to flow, WWF says.
