A dream year for culture began in Joensuu. You can come across free events, performances and exhibitions even on a shopping trip.
An art exhibition in the corridor of the shopping center, food parties in the market, music in the museum and more than a hundred other free cultural events promise the theme year in Joensuu, named the dream year of culture.
Dozens of new openings are coming, emphasizing community spirit and a low threshold to participate.
– The content of the calendar will be known a couple of months ahead, but you can still participate as a performer after that. We want to bring free events especially within reach of young people and into people’s everyday life, Mujunen says.
In its first week, the dream year brings a cafe to Joensuu Art Museum Onni, where you can hear live music. Musician Heiduška steps in front of the audience, praising the already lively cultural life in Joensuu.
This week also saw the opening of a changing art exhibition in the shopping center Metropolis, which will continue well into spring. Paintings, pictures and sculptures by eight visual artists are displayed in the display window, so you don’t have to cross any threshold to enter the gallery.
– It’s good to come across art a little unexpectedly, like this shopping trip. Even if you don’t like everything you see, art can move you, he reflects.
Culture’s dream year project manager Anne Mujunen reminds us that all events are free of charge. Of course, cultural creators are paid compensation for their work.
Joensuu’s dream year of culture is financed by the city of Joensuu and the European Regional Development Fund.
