50 years as a Hartwall truck driver and still not stopped – Pentti Söyrilä’s long career is a rarity

Finnish careers become longer as life expectancy increases and retirement age shifts. Pentti Söyrilä from Lahti has a 50 -year career for the same employer.

So far, Söyrilä is a rarity, as the average length of Finnish earnings is 34 years.

However, according to the receipt, the duration of Finnish working careers will increase as life expectancy increases and retirement age becomes later.

Change is slow. Most of the earnings have grown in over 50 years of age. From 2010 to 2022, the earnings of over 50 years of age have increased by 2.1 years.

The composition of working careers will also change. Many begin their work with different periodic contracts and short -term work. In addition, many people change jobs numerous times during their careers. According to the receipt, this is likely to increase the income level, which has been observed in studies.

Employers value more experience

For these reasons, a career like Söyrilä’s career will be less common in the future.

– Hopefully, such a career will still be, because it is a great thing and tells about mutual commitment and the fact that the employer is willing to enable such grooves, says Kuitto.

Studies have shown that Finnish employers’ attitudes of the elderly have become more positive over the last 20 years.

-Employees over the age of 55 are estimated to survive many jobs as well as younger people. Problems arise if over 50 years of age becomes unemployed, as finding a new job can be difficult.

Malt drink was a valued employer

At the age of 18, Pentti Söyrilä started with Mallas drink Oy in Lahti in 1975.

Söyrilä remembers the era of the old malt drink, when the factory was located in the center of Lahti.

– In the morning, each employee received an aluminum pole from the gateway, which was returned when the shift ended. This was how it was known who were at work.

Malt drink and its products had a major impact on the Lahti image in the 1970s. Many remember the slogan of Lahti, of course! Malt drinks were rightly proud of their employer.

– The reputation was high and it was great to say I was here at work. There were probably not many households in Lahti at that time that had no contact with a malt drink, says Söyrilä.

Drinks, especially the 1970s hit product, the carbonated lemonade siesta, and lemon soda, made since the 1930s, have come to mind.

– They were good then! At that time, lemon soda was drunk with beer in a British model. And after all, we also had our own cola drink, King-Cola, recalls Söyrilä.

Work is fun!

Many people at work are expecting to retire impatient. Söyrilä, on the other hand, would not be able to retire. He has already informed the supervisor that he is ready to help even as a lure if help is needed.

– It’s because it is nice to work! There are good co -workers here and I hope we keep in touch in the future.

Although there is plenty to do at home, it is probably not easy to end a 50 -year career. The future as a pensioner draws Söyrilä serious.

– This requires melting. Hope you get used to quickly. Yes, it certainly will tint the last time you close the workplace door behind.
