Education Committee: the Nastola Kirkonkylä school will continue to operate for one more academic year
The decision of the Lahti Education Board will put financial pressure on basic education of around 700 000 euros.
Nastola Kirkonkylä school will continue to operate at least until the academic year 2025-26.The Lahti Board of Education decided on this at its meeting on Tuesday.
The Education Committee was presented with a proposal to close the Kirkonkylä school as early as next August. However, after voting, the board decided to grant the school an extension.
The final vote was on whether to close the school next autumn or run it for at least one more academic year. The continuation period won by a vote of 8-1. There was also one abstention.
In addition, the Board of Education proposes in its decision that the cost of continuing school activities in the village will be covered by an amending budget for this year, which will cost the city EUR 325,000. The school’s spring season 2026 would take into account when drawing up next year’s budget.
According to the city, the total cost for the continuation year would be approximately EUR 700,000.
In connection with the investigation of the extension of the Kirkonkylä school, the condition inspection of the Nastopol property of the Kukkanen school building, the Nastopol property, must also be investigated. At the same time, the future of the Nastola area upper secondary school and the implementation of a possible integrated school solution must be considered.
Two dissenting opinions were submitted to the decision.
The closure of the Kirkonkylä school is justified on the basis of other condition test results. According to the city, it is not possible to organize a full -time teaching in the current school building.
At least in exercise and hard materials, according to the city release, education has to be organized elsewhere.
The use of three other classrooms and an afternoon activity space will also be excluded. In addition, staying in the canteen has to be limited only for eating.
