Cinemas in Finland are still suffering this year from the loss of audiences caused by corona restrictions. Viewership numbers fell by 20 percent from the time before the pandemic.
*Top Gun: Maverick*, about fighter pilots, is by far the most watched movie of the year. The sequel to the 1986 hit has grossed more than $1.48 billion worldwide this year, according to Box Office Mojo.
Also in Finland, the film became number one in the audience statistics of the year.
The work has also received several mentions in lists of the best films of the year. Other names have been the sci-fi comedy *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, also seen in Finland, and the horror film *Nope*.

International attention for domestic films, fewer viewers in theaters
A total of three Finnish films were selected for the Sundance program. The other two were, along with the horror film *Pahanhautaja*, which garnered praise abroad, and the documentary about Mormon preachers, *The Mission*.
Girls girls girls were selected as Finland’s Oscar nominee in September.
Both *Tytöt tyots tyots* and *Pahanhautaja* ranked 4th and 64th in Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the best movies of the year.

In autumn alone, 30 domestic films premiered in cinemas. However, viewership numbers fell by 20 percent from the time before the corona pandemic. In total, more than five million people had visited the theaters by mid-November.
Hitchcock was superseded by the single mother
Over three hours, Jeanne Dielman follows the daily routines of the title character, a single mother, which repeats itself day after day. The sudden rise of the film described as feminist to the top of the list has divided opinions.
The film premiered in Finnish theaters on December 22. In the past, it has been seen mostly in archival shows.
– I don’t remember the exact course of events, but at some point I fell into some kind of trance or a strange psychophysical state, which was accompanied by muscle pain. I got into the main character’s chores so much that I started imitating his movements while watching the movie, Karemo writes.
