Dance House brings top international group to Helsinki – this is what a dance piece on climate crisis and extinction looks like

An international dance group is visiting Helsinki, and their work asks whether we have lost touch with ourselves.

The House of Dance’s own international programming is bearing fruit: a visiting theatre dedicated to dance brought the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT1), considered one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies, to Helsinki.

In Helsinki, the group will present a three-part stage production *Figures in Extinction*, the latest part of which had its world premiere in Manchester in February.

Thanks to the Dance House, Helsinki has become an increasingly important part of the international dance scene, and the NDT’s visit is a good example of this.

The dancer begins the performance in an intense light that creates a mystical and intense atmosphere.
Figures in Extinction is a reminder of species that have disappeared from the planet.

The group led by Molnar is known for its high technical level, expression and artistic ambition. According to Molnar, maintaining quality requires the entire machine to commit to the group.

NDT organizes test performances around the world and is reflected in the group level.

– Throughout my life, as a dancer and choreographer, I have asked what talent exactly means and what motivates people in dance. I still ask the same artistic director of NDT, says Molnar.

NDT has two groups. In addition to the leading group, NDT2 consists of rising dance artists at the beginning of his career. Molnar assumes that the dancers who want the group have a strong classic background, the ability to improvise and devote themselves to contemporary dance.

– We are looking for a unique sound in both dance and choreographies.

The dancer presents a strong and artistic movement on a vaguely lit stage, with a number of other performers in the background.
NDT dancers must have a strong classical background and the ability to improvise. The group performs contemporary dance works.

Man has lost touch with himself

NDT mainly produces its own works, and their authors Molnar carefully selects.

– I and my team are constantly looking for new dance makers around the world. Of course, we also work with established names, but the bigger question is how we find \”young voices\” – choreographers that may not even know that they are, and how we support them.

Their work * Figures in Extinction * deals with current and frequently oncoming themes in the arts: extinct species, human nature, climate crisis and death.

The work that progresses through dance and theater has been scripted by a climate todi -like, and Trump says he knows more about the environment than others believe.

Emily Molnar leans on the wall in the lobby of the house.
Emily Molnar, a ballet dancer with a career in Canada and Germany, has been Artistic Director of NDT since 2020. She is also a choreographer.

Long and McBurney’s spectacle was born as a result of a four -year correspondence. Pite has worked as a \”Hoviko -Coreograph\” for NDT since 2008. It was specifically he wanted to do the work with McBurney.

– Combining the two artists was a huge creative opportunity for us as a dance group.

Figures in extinction * is ultimately a question of whether a person has lost the connection to himself.

– We are losing our responsibility from the planet because we have lost our connection and who we are? The authors of the work think so, and I agree, Molnar says.
