Ice conditions are bad all over South Savo – Pekka Turunen from Juva: “The frost went through at once”

Ice conditions can vary significantly within a single lake. This is what the ice situation looked like on Lake Luonteri in Lake Saimaa.

The ice conditions can vary widely from place to place and there are only a few centimetres of steel ice.

The ice situation in South Savo is bad at the moment.

Measurements taken by the Ely Centre early this week show that the province’s lakes do not yet have enough ice to support human weight.

The total thickness of the ice cover in the lakes of South Savo varies between 3-15 centimetres, depending on the lake. With the exception of Peruvee in Pertunmaa, the ice thickness at the regional monitoring sites is 3-10 centimetres below the average for the 2000s.

This has also been noticed by Pekka Turunen from Juva, who has been following the ice situation of his home beach with a close eye for a long time.

– I went to the end of the pier to try the ice, and Tuura went through at once. Personally, I wouldn’t go there on the ice with any tricks or footwork. I have never seen such bad ice.

According to Turunen, especially near Ukonsaari, the ice can be treacherous.

– There is almost no steel ice at all, it’s a kind of snow mixed mess.

According to the Ely center’s measurements, there is less than five centimeters of stronger steel ice in a large part of Etelä-Savo. In addition to that, there is water and layers of slush on top of the ice, which makes moving on the ice difficult.

The Ely center reminds that there must be at least five centimeters of steel ice under a person walking alone. When riding a snowmobile, there must be at least 15 centimeters of steel ice along the entire length of the driving route. Steel ice only about 20 centimeters thick can support a passenger car.
