A pacemaker, or defibrillator, is a device that anyone can use to help with CPR. According to the Heart Federation, there are still too few of them registered.
CPR-assisted cardioversion devices are increasingly available in public places. The register managed by the Finnish Resuscitation Council, the Finnish Red Cross and the Finnish Heart Federation contains just under 7 000 shock absorbers. The number of defibrillators in the register has increased by about 1 500 per year.
However, the Sydänliitto estimates that in Kanta- and Päijät-Häme, for example, there should be more cardiac surgeons in relation to the population. In Kanta-Häme, 191 devices have been registered, in Päijät-Häme 230.
– We always take a first aid kit with us. If we discover on the spot that the heart has stopped, we will get a defibrillator and start using it according to the instructions on the device.
However, the user of the device does not have to be a trained person, but a defibrillator located in a public place is intended for use by anyone. When Karisma’s defibrillator is turned on, it starts to \”talk\” and give operating instructions.
The heart monitor can provide valuable minutes
According to Blek-Vehluoto, a defibrillator can save time when the emergency number has been called and CPR has been started.
– It is really valuable if a defibrillator is available for use within minutes of a cardiac arrest. Then the survival rate of the resuscitated person increases considerably, he states.
