The funding will allow the University of Eastern Finland to revive the Karelian language in peace for the next two years.
Work to revive the Karelian language at the University of Eastern Finland continues.
The Ministry of Education and Culture has awarded the university a state grant to continue the revitalisation of the language in 2023-2024, amounting to 300 000 euros for two years.
The Karelian language and culture can be studied as a minor subject at the University of Eastern Finland, and the revitalisation work dovetails nicely with the university’s teaching.
During the next two-year period, the university will further expand cooperation with the Karelian-speaking community. The purpose is to support both written and oral language use.
The work to improve the social status of the Karelian language also continues.
The current funding for language revitalization was ending at the turn of the year.
