The restoration of the bird sanctuary at the bottom of Kilpiäistenpohja will start in spring-winter – the artificial island will provide more nesting sites for birds
Without restoration measures, the natural values of the nature reserve on the border between Lahti and Hollola will deteriorate further.
The Kilpiäistenpohja bird sanctuary on the border between Lahti and Hollola will be restored in the spring and winter.
The artificial island will be built as a nesting site for birds, with the aim of restoring the population of barn owls in the area and supporting other birds such as the highly endangered red-necked eagle.
It is expected that without restoration measures, the natural values of the Kilpiäinenpohja will further deteriorate.
– As the area can be cleared more open, the birds are easier to nest. Other nature values and birdwatchers in the area will also benefit from open terrain, says Mäntynen.
Frogs and dragonflies also benefit

In addition, the space of the region’s aquatic ecosystem will be improved by digging the stitches and channels. At the same time, sheltered nesting sites are offered, for example, for frogs and dragonflies.
The city of Lahti and the municipality of Hollola promote cooperation in the restoration of the Kilpiäinen Nature Nature Reserve. The measures are aimed not only at restoring the natural values of the area but also to promote the long -term diversity of nearby nature.
The funding of EUR 73,000 for the project has been obtained from the Metsä Group Nature Project Finance Program. The project is responsible for the city of Lahti.
