Two large reserves, i.e. the right to apply for a mining permit, have been granted in the vicinity of the Pyhä ski resort. As a result, Pyhätunturi Oy has come out against possible mining projects in the area.
According to Pyhätunturi Oy, two large “mining reservations” have been granted in Pelkosenniemi near the Pyhä-Luosto National Park and Pyhä ski resort in November and December.
Pyhätunturi Oy announced on Wednesday that it is actively opposing mining in “core areas of tourism and areas particularly sensitive to nature”.
According to the company, operators in the Pyhä area have drawn up a citizens’ initiative to get the municipality of Pelkosenniemi to take action to stop the mining project.
The initiative has already collected almost 3,000 signatures in three days. Pyhätunturi Oy also says that it has signed the initiative itself.
