Managing Director Ari Suomalainen says that the Junior Pelicans’ board stands closely behind the coach of the junior team.

The events started with racist shouting at a junior match in early November.

The Junior Pelicans board, which met on Thursday evening, has unanimously decided to refer the fine and the coach’s punishment imposed by the Ice Hockey Association to the Sports Legal Protection Board.

According to CEO Ari Suomalainen, the board has consulted the coach of the junior team and the club’s management is closely behind his views.

The controversial events started at a junior hockey match in early November, when a Pelicans player was subjected to racist shouting.

The team’s coach asked the referees of the match to intervene, but the referees were unclear about the course of events and the shouter.

Because the incident was not addressed, the Pelicans Junior team stopped playing and left the locker room.

The Ice Hockey Association’s disciplinary committee punished the Junior-Pelicans for stopping the game, because according to the rulebook, only the referees have the right to decide to stop the game.

The club was fined a thousand euros and the responsible coach was banned for three matches.

Many in the Pelicans consider the actions of the Ice Hockey Association shocking.

– The collection of materials for the appeal will take a few more days, but this matter will now definitely be taken to the judicial security board for consideration, says Suomalainen.
