The renovated Lahti Kauppahalli could open as early as May Day – a local food company from Heinola is behind it

The Lahti Kauppahalli, which is currently under renovation, is set to open with a completely new look in May Day.

The store, which will be completely renovated, will focus on local food and small local producers. Heinola Hila, which has a local food market and café-restaurant in Heinola, has the main responsibility.

According to Matsari, the atmosphere of the market hall is a perfect match for local food and small producers. So expanding to Lahti was easy in the end.

– Seventeen years have been held in Heinola’s side of small producers, and it has always been watched to see if one could expand somewhere. The Kolli Foundation was convinced of us and did not want to leave this card unmoved, Matsar says.

A dozen employees

Ten new employees are recruited to the new market hall, including the seller, chef and baker.

– It’s starting to be a little hurry, but on the other hand, the process could not be started until things were officially announced. Now there is a recruitment for May, says Matsar.

The major renovation that began last year has been delayed due to, for example, roofing. The roof structures turned out to be a hundred years old and the roof was practically renewed completely. Now the surfaces are being renewed inside.

Agent Esko Kolli regrets the city’s plans to move bus traffic away from the market. For him, it can influence the vitality of the market and reflect on the number of customers in the market hall.
