The cultural award of the city of Kajaani has been awarded this year to visual artist Mayumi Niiranen-Hisatom. Even if there were exports for him, the artist’s dream is to gain a foothold specifically in Kajaani.
Visual artist Mayumi Niiranen-Hisatomi has been accepted and is grateful for her selection as the recipient of the Kajaani City Culture Award.
The versatile visual artist’s works can be found in Kajaani’s new hospital as well as in art museums and collections in many places in Finland. Even if there is export, the artist’s dream is to gain a foothold specifically in Kajaani.
– Everyone wants to go to Helsinki to hold an exhibition. I want to present my works here myself. It’s important for me to be here.
The artist has had time to organize exhibitions in several places in Finland in addition to Japan, and in addition to visual art, he likes to do, among other things, space and textile art and collaborations with other artists.
However, he has settled in Kajaani so well that he wants to display his art here, and not in Helsinki, as is the general trend.
Niiranen-Hisatomi graduated from Osaka University of Art in 2006. He moved to Kajaani in 2010 and his first exhibition in the city was in the library the following year.
He is currently one of the highest-level visual artists from Kainuu, and his production is characterized by versatility.
The artist often uses old traditional techniques in his work. In addition to painting, he has made spatial art, textile art and combined painting with photographs and objects.
For the new hospital in Kainuu, an artist has acquired painted tree trunks, an environmental artwork for the roof platform and a rock painting for the yard.
The award was given at the Independence Day civic celebration in Kaukametsä. Its amount is 1,500 euros.
*The subject can be discussed until 11 p.m. on December 8.*
