Raakku more than doubles in value when species’ penalty rates are revised
The Ministry of the Environment Regulation defines the value of protected animals and plants. The value of crayfish and towhees will increase significantly, while the value of the whooper swan and white-tailed eagle will decrease.
The damage caused by crab damage in the summer was estimated to be in the millions of euros. The value of plants and animals as defined in the Ministry of the Environment regulation has been used in the calculation.
The regulation is now being updated. It is currently in the consultation phase.
So far, the monetary value of a single crab, or river mussel, has been €589. If the proposed regulation goes through, the price of a crab, for example, will rise by a factor of 2.5 to €1 469.
The indicative values of sedated animals and plants are rising for many species.
For example, the value of a Saimaa norpa is now 9,755 euros, and in the future it will be 11,460 euros. The value of the flying squirrel is rising from 1,009 euros to 1,689 euros, and the value of the ringed lizard even quadruples from 420 euros to 1,709 euros.
The value of some protected animals drops significantly. For example, the value of a whooper swan drops to one-tenth, i.e. from 2,018 euros to only 200 euros. The value of the sea eagle falls even more drastically. It is now 7,400 euros, and if the new regulation is approved, the value will be only 400 euros.
For the white-backed woodpecker, the drop is more moderate: its value drops from 4,037 euros to 1,665 euros.
The previous regulation is from 1995. In the revised regulation, the values of the species are defined using the same principles and calculation methods. The opinion round ends at the end of February.
