The people of Ivalo are now studying from high school to high school in one building

School building in winter
When you enter this part of Kaartee, a child can spend a dozen years studying in this house. Beanie in and white cap with curls out.

Kaarre, the name of Ivalo’s new multipurpose building, hints at reindeer husbandry and treasure. Kaarre is a reindeer fence with sieves, slats and branches. Learning and culture are treasures in themselves.

The people of Ivalo have got a new school, Kaartee. Kaarre means a reindeer separation fence and you enter it from the yard through Siula in the middle of the kirnu. There are offices around it, just like in the reindeer fence.

Offices in Kaartee are learning cells where everyday school work is done. There are eight cells and they have their own color according to the eight seasons. In addition to cells, Kaartee has spacious common spaces where you can study and get new ideas.

– While preparing the work, I read traditional Sámi fairy tales and more recent adventures, which inspired me a lot. I took a strong outline as one of the elements of the work, which may evoke a connection to cartoons and through that to storytelling, which, at least from my own point of view, appears to be a strong part of Saminess, says Kontio.

Education is a treasure, just like culture

There is also a treasure in the school. It is either knowledge, skill and learning or experiences and culture. School treasure or cultural treasure.

Deputy principal Pirkko Olli is happy about the new school. Based on the feedback he received, he can say that no one wants to go back to the old days.

Ivalo’s new school building was presented during the week’s public open day. Dozens of interested people arrived, most of whom had studied at the old national school, which used to be on the site of the new school.

Former, retired teachers had also come to admire the school. A placement in a new, fine school could be a glimpse of the corner of the eye.

Olli Akkanen taught physical education at the old school for decades. The well-liked gym was moved at the presentation of the new school itself.

Kaarre is everyone’s shared youth experience

Kaarre is a unified school, from kindergarten to upper secondary school. At the same time, it is Inari’s multipurpose center for culture and sports, with cinemas and gymnasiums. Ivalo’s children will spend most of their youth in this house, so special attention has been paid to comfort.

The arch contains a lot of high open spaces, which you might think are echo chambers, but they are not. In the lobby space, the chatter of conversation dies down and is at a tolerable level, so the acoustics at least play.

There is 9,000 square meters of space in Kaartie on two floors. There are 500 students and 74 staff in various professions.

– Even though there are more than five hundred people there on weekdays, everything has gone smoothly after the initial getting used to it. At first, the little students were confused when there are so many adults here. Then everyday life started to go smoothly and people take each other into consideration admirably, says assistant principal Olli.

Ivalo’s cinema Aslak will go down in history with Kaartee. Now the municipality has an auditorium, where movies, music, and theater can enjoy their rights. Kaartee’s hall is equipped with fixed sound and light technology, a luxury that has not been seen in Ivalo before. The movie theater will open in Kaartee at the beginning of 2023.
