Pohjois Savo ely center has started the renovation of Maaninga’s Patalahti bird wetland. The goal is to improve the conservation value of the bird wetland and create better conditions for nesting waterfowl.

Floating vegetation in Patalahti is dredged with an excavator. The dredged mass is not transported away, but new nesting islands are formed from it. In addition, shallow springs are dredged in the luhta areas, where the water depth is about half a meter.

Among other things, dredging also creates open water channels, the purpose of which is to make it difficult for small predators, such as minks and raccoons, to access the nesting islands.

The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

During the work, dredging causes turbidity in Patalahti and the water below. Water quality and turbidity are monitored with water samples and aerial photography.
