During the autumn monitoring visits of the Natural Resources Institute Finland, the mole situation was found to be quite strong, especially in the Käsivar.
Mole populations in Upper Lapland have increased significantly over the past summer, says Natural Resources Institute Finland. According to the Finnish Nature Conservancy, the autumn monitoring surveys showed that the mole situation, especially in the Käsivar, has already become quite strong.
According to Luke, the mole populations in Käsivar and Utsjoki have been increasing for the past couple of years. If the coming winter is favourable for small rodents, the peak of the mole population is predicted to be reached next autumn.
In contrast, moles are scarce in the majority of Forest Lapland. Although the vole populations in the area are mostly low, there may be slightly higher numbers of voles in some places,” says Luke.
