Jukka Himanen, the airport’s CEO, is still waiting for the Parliament’s decision on support for tourism. Half a million euros would allow a year’s continuation of flights between Lappeenranta and Bergamo.

As part of the city’s budget, the council decided that the city will support the airport with €1.3 million annually between 2023 and 2025.

According to Himanen, the subsidy will remain at the same level as in 2022 and will secure the basic operations of the airport, such as staff salaries, air traffic control services and maintenance.

– In practice, it ensures that we are a full-service field. We can accommodate taxi, charter and cargo flights, as well as Finnair training flights.

The airport still needs additional funding to add more flight routes.

A day before the first voyage, the shelves of the ship’s shop were still being stocked with the last products.

The start of the MyStar service was delayed several times during the autumn, beyond the dates announced by the shipping company. Technical problems and adjustment needs, such as in the propulsion and steering system, were encountered during test runs of the vessel.

Driving slower saves fuel

– Now, however, we don’t want to look back, but forward, says Nõgene and promises more travel comfort and technical progress with MyStar.

In Rovaniemi, Santa’s Village, in the Arctic Circle, travel records are expected to be broken this year. Picture from 2020, when interest rate restrictions slowed down tourism.

The winter season started in October, earlier than ever. The pre-corona record for visitor numbers in 2019 looks set to be broken this winter.

– The season has started earlier than ever before. The Christmas holiday season has already started at the end of October. The year 2022 is about to catch up with 2019, which was the best year ever for tourism in Lapland,” says Sanna Kärkkäinen, CEO of Visit Rovaniemi.

Local tourism entrepreneurs have told Kärkkäinen that they “do Saturday every day”. So there have been busy, busy days all season long this season.

This is due to the fact that demand has stagnated since the korona period and that Lapland is the number one destination of choice for those who want to travel.

Freezing temperatures boost snowmaking at ski resorts – fears of electricity bills in Turku and Salo

A snow cannon snows the slope at the Hirvensalo ski center in Turku.
A snow cannon snowed down a slope at the Hirvensalo ski resort in January 2021.

The Hirvensalo and Meri-Teijo ski resorts try to snow at night, but the frosts should also be used during the day. The aim is to have the slopes open before Christmas.

The ski resorts of Southwest Finland in Hirvensalo, Turku, and Meri-Teijo, Salo, are balancing on the electric curve when making cannon snow. Both companies use electricity from the stock exchange. Electricity is needed for both snow guns and water pumps.

In Salo, the snow began to fall on Thursday morning. At the Hirvensalo ski resort, the snow is still waiting to start. However, the guns are ready on the slopes.

Cannonballing is concentrated at night, but frosts must also be exploited during the day.

Freezing temperatures trigger snow cannons

According to Lehtinen, the ski centers have no options for the time of snowfall if they want to keep the slopes open.

The era of giant snow castles in Kemi is over – a tourism company that swallowed millions of tax euros now believes in an icebreaker

Kemi's tourism icebreaker Sampo Veitsiluoto in the harbor.
The tourist icebreaker Sampo is waiting at the pier for the cruise season to begin.

The snow-castle town of Kemi is looking for a new start in tourism after the koruna. Kemi will not build a large snow castle because of the high costs involved.

Kemi is known for its large snow castle and the tourist icebreaker Sampo. Kemi’s first snow castle was built for the winter of 1996 and more than twenty were built.

Now the construction of the snow castle has come to an end, at least for the time being.

– We are not going to compete to see who has the most expensive or biggest snow castle. Instead, our year-round snow castle is now in its first normal business season and we will see how it works,” says Löppönen.

The year-round snow castle is a cold space of around 400 square meters in size and nine meters high, with, among other things, sculptures made of ice. It is located in the approximately 3,500 square meter main building of the snow castle area.
