Kemi’s year-round snow castle will include a snow labyrinth, a bubble hill and a curling rink – the winter park is open to all

In the foreground is Noora Barria, a woman dressed in a blue top coat and beanie. A snowy labyrinth and white big buildings can be seen in his background.
Noora Barria, Kemi Tourism Liaison and Development Manager, hopes that visitors to the winter park will use the facilities of the adjacent year-round snow castle.

The winter park in Kemi opens on Monday and is free of charge for everyone. No covered snow castle will be built this year.

A winter park will be built next to the all-year-round Snow Castle in Kemi. A snow maze, a tuba hill and a curling track will be built in the Strawberry Cottage area for winter play. The park, which opens on Monday, is open to all.

In Kemi, there will be no covered snow castle this year, which has also been paid for by local people. Naturally, the winter park will also generate costs for the tourism company.

– It costs less money than a covered snow castle. Building a covered space is more difficult and more expensive. And snow sculptures require a team of workers to be brought in,” says Barria.

On the other hand, however, tourism hopes to also get income from the castle all year round.

– The entrepreneur of Sokeri-Jussi will buy the building rights of the building to be demolished and build a hotel on the site, if the zoning change is approved, says Helander.

The plan change will be discussed in future meetings of the community board.

Tourism businesses in North Savo are being urged to get their websites up and running and provide information about their services in as many languages as possible.

Soon everyone is walking towards the dogs, who are already waiting impatiently. Ahead is an experience that foreign tourists come to Finland for: dog sledding.

On the day of the interview, a German couple should have been present, but they had to cancel due to illness. Later in the day, a group of 20 Germans were due to arrive.

Sami Mattiniemi, the ski resort’s slope manager, hopes that people will find out about the slope conditions from the slope cameras and on the spot, rather than making hasty decisions based on weather forecasts alone.

Weather variations have been visible on the Messilä ski slopes in Hollola.

Mattiniemi hopes that people will trust slope information from the ground, and not be immediately alarmed by news in the tabloids about severe winter weather or frosts, for example.

– For example, on Tuesday last week, some articles called for a day off and staying at home. We had three millimetres of snow on the slopes, but the slope was empty,” says Mattiniemi.

According to Mattiniemi, the same phenomenon dropped, for example, the number of visitors at the Epiphany to a third of a normal day.

In total, there are almost 12,000 seasonal apartments in the municipalities. The purpose is to further increase their use and ensure residents’ enjoyment.

For example, the improvement of remote work opportunities and digital services is planned, as is the marketing of the area to Tampere-Pirkkala air passengers.

Lapland is already a well-known luxury holiday destination in the world. Järvi-Suomi is also investing in luxury tourism destinations, but there are still difficulties in reaching foreign tourists.

Silence – that’s the first thing you notice. It’s nothing but the knocking of a woodpecker. One couple walks hand in hand along a forest path, otherwise no one is seen.

The hotel’s entrance, surrounded by natural stones, is dark and tunnel-like.

Kuru Resort was opened a year ago in Rantasalmi. In addition to the main building, the six million euro hotel includes 20 separate villas.

According to Finnair, there are few reservations on flights to China in the coming weeks – the chief medical officer considers the effect of the restrictions to be minor

There are still very few Chinese travelers in Finland and there are no signs of a rush in the near future either.

The government’s corona ministerial working group decided at the end of the week that Finland is preparing to require air passengers arriving from China to have a negative corona test result that is no more than two days old. The date of entry into force of the requirement is still open.

The risk of a new disease wave will be lower this time. At least if you estimate the risk by the number of Chinese tourists.

It may be that there will be few Chinese groups in street photos in the future. According to the forecast, for example, the number of Chinese passengers this year will also be far below the level of the record year 2019.

– Of course, the direct flight and short flight time made Finland an attractive travel destination. So it remains to be seen how attractive Finland will be as a travel or exchange destination for the Chinese in the future, says Tallqvist.
