A national park is in the works for Central Ostrobothnia on the lands of Kokkola and Kannus

The aerial photo shows flocks of coastal dykes in forested and swampy terrain.
The aerial view shows the area’s characteristic ancient beach ramparts in the middle of the marshland.

The uniqueness of the area was first noticed in Kannus, where a group of activists have been working for years to protect the area.

They want to establish a national park in the wilderness area located on the lands of Kokkola and Kannu.

The area of Eteläneva – Viitasalonneva – and Seljäsenva is mainly in the Lohtaja and Kälviä regions of Kokkola. Part of it is also on the lands of Kannus, about 10 kilometers south of the center of Kannus.

A group of activists from Kannu have pushed for the protection of the 2,600-hectare undrained bog, and it was granted nature protection status at the beginning of the year. The area belongs to the national bog protection program and Natura 2000 areas. There are also private nature conservation sites.

Now they would like to establish a national park called Rautakuru in the area. The Finnish Nature Conservation Union, Central Ostrobothnia Nature Association have also been involved in the preparatory work. and the Lestijokiseutu Environment Association.

The special features of the national park candidate are the sandy banks of banks, i.e. curves or arcs, located in the middle of an undrained wilderness swamp. Thanks to them, you can walk and even drive a car in the middle of the swamp.

Would the touristic value increase?

Rautakuru would be the first complete national park located in the province, as only part of Salamajärvi is located in Central Ostrobothnia.

As a national park, Rautakuru would gain recognition, which would mean good and bad.

– Of course, when more people come to nature, it has its own risks. However, I see that visibility could also serve tourism. There is no similar tourist destination in the province. This could bring its own addition to it.

The wind farm project is thought provoking

Viitasalonneva has been sketched for the wind park project. That worries me

– It’s a concern, but I trust that they know how to take nature values into account in planning. It goes without saying that windmills will not be erected in a protected area. The distance must be at least two kilometers. In Perho, a distance of 5 kilometers has been negotiated to the Salamajärvi area, Huuki knows.

The city of Kannus has approached the city of Kokkola with the idea of establishing a national park. The trustees of Kokkola and Kannus got to know the planned national park at the end of October. Kokkola’s Group and Urban Development Division will process Kannu’s proposal on November 7.
