Library bus clerk Niko Taskinen has traveled with Käkriäinen for the past two years.

Savonlinna’s former library car will stop operating and the next one will be put into use at the beginning of December.

Savonlinna’s long-lived library car Käkriäinen retired on October 31. The city of Savonlinna is now planning to auction it off.

The preservation of the library car in Savonlinna has been at stake many times, but the residents have repeatedly appealed to the decision-makers to preserve it.

Now it’s time for Käkriäinen to rest, because he has almost half a million kilometers and more than 20 years behind him.

– You can say that 95 percent of the customers are regular customers and really loyal. There are people at several stops who have never failed to come. You can mostly check the watch from them, says Taskinen.

The library car is now going to be emptied, photographed and inspected before it is put up for sale in an online auction.

Taskinen has heard that many former library cars have been converted into motorhomes and even horse transporters. For Käkriää, he yearns for a slightly more glorious retirement.

– It would be great if some band took a gig bus from here, and Käkriäinen could taste the rock ‘n’ roll life in retirement.

However, the time of the library car is not over in Savonlinna, because a new library car has already been acquired. It will start operating in December.
