500 flower bulbs planted in Lahti to commemorate the year as an environmental capital

500 early spring flowering skilla have been planted in Lahti and surrounding areas. The idea of environmental ambassador Onerva Vartiainen is linked to the European Capital of Environment Year and was implemented this autumn.

In Lahti, the skis were put in a multi in Erkonpuisto to wait for spring.

– I talked to other environmental ambassadors about it and suggested that we plant skillo.

500 bulbs were received as a corporate donation. Now they have been put in a multi-pack with partners in Lahti and Nastola, Asikkala, Hollola and Orimattila.

Among others, Onerva Vartiainen, a former Green MEP and environmental ambassador, came up with the idea for the skilla.

Skillas were chosen for planting among the bulb flowers for several reasons.

– The skills have the blue color of Lahti, the hares don’t eat them and the flowers spread a little like blue worms, just like environmental awareness has also spread a little, says Onerva Vartiainen.
