Marja Suna, a fashion artist known from Marimekko and Kalevala Koru, has died

Marja Suna created a remarkable career and worked as a designer in several Finnish companies.

Suna had a decades-long career as a designer. He is best known for the Marimekko clothes he designed and Kalevala Jewelry.

Suna received several awards and recognitions for her work.

He was awarded the State Art Industry Award in 1979 and was selected as Fashion Artist of the Year in 1998.

Marja Suna also received the Kaj Franck design award for her more than 50-year design career.

In the same year, 2010, he was invited to become an honorary member of the University of Arts and Sciences.

For Marja Suna, jewelry was part of her outfit

Suna wanted to be an artist since she was a child, but her father did not approve of his daughter’s desired profession. Father considered becoming a freelance artist a dream.

Suna’s father suggested that she study at the Art Institute, where a fashion department was founded around the same time. Suna studied fashion art at the Art Institute 1951–1954 and later taught at a school.

After her studies, Suna created a significant career in the Finnish ready-to-wear industry. He designed clothes, jewelry, shoes and buttons for several companies, such as Silo, Herrala, Kestila, Turo, Piirose and Luhda.

As a fashion artist, Suna was of the opinion that jewelry is an important part of dressing. At Kalevala Koru, he designed, among other things, the Lumikukka jewelry series, which became a sales success.

For the longest time, Marja Suna worked at Marimekko, where she retired in 2003.
