Turning off the street lights during the darkest hours of the night would bring the city more than 400 thousand euros in savings.

The city of Lahti has not yet decided how to reduce the city’s electricity consumption. The city government discussed the energy saving action program drawn up by Lahti Tilakeskus and the urban environment service area at its meeting on Monday, but returned the matter to preparation.

More than twenty proposals were included in the program. Among other things, the program proposed lowering the indoor temperature of the city’s premises, reducing the opening hours of swimming pools and turning off the street lights. According to the action program, for example, turning off the street lights in August-May between one and five in the morning would bring more than 2,000 megawatt hours and more than 400,000 euros in annual savings.

Lahti city government decided to return to the preparation of the action plan so that both users and group companies are included in the preparation of the plan.
