Electrofishing surveys in Lappeenranta’s Mustajoki River found trout fry born this year. A year ago, the situation was less comforting.
Trout spawning seems to have been successful in Lappeenranta’s Mustajoki. Electrofishing surveys found trout born this year.
In September, the Natural Resources Institute Finland carried out experimental fisheries in the main estuary and tributaries of the Black River. There were juveniles in all test areas.
– Not the best of years, but it’s better than average at the moment,” says Saura.
The estimate is based on field work. A more detailed analysis of the results is still in progress.
Researcher: position could be better
The result of the electric test fishing is good news for Mustajoki. Last fall, none were observed in the river.
– Taimen is not terribly sensitive to such a one-year disaster, but of course there is now one year class missing, says Saura.
Several year classes of trout live in Mustajoki, and according to Saura, there is some reserve.
– But it must be said that that position is not in good terms at all. Could be better. In terms of chick production, some years are better and some are worse. If there is such a nasty emission, it will weaken the situation even more.
Important trout for others
The fry production of Mustajoki is also important for trout stocks in other rivers.
Mustajoki is the only river in Southeast Finland where the original sea trout population still exists. The river’s trout are used to restore and revive the trout populations of other border rivers.
