Tampere leaves some parks in the ground – decomposing leaves improve soil and provide food for bugs

At the same time, the city is saved from having to transport the leaves to the waste centre. The city encourages ordinary people in Tampere to do the same with leaves in their own yards.

The City of Tampere is increasing biodiversity in its green spaces with autumn leaves. Leaves from trees will be left on the ground in Viinikanpuisto and six sites in Hervanta.

This is because the leaves left on the ground in autumn improve the soil and provide food for the micro-organisms that live there.

Leaves are left on the ground in Viinikanpuisto Park and in the Hervanta area in Ahvenispuisto, Laattapuisto, Pallopuisto, Hupakanojanpuisto, Kuusikkopuisto and Urheilijanpuisto.

The plan is to try the same thing in other districts in the coming years, based on the experiences that are now being gathered.

Keeping the corridors clean

In selected locations, fallen leaves are left on the ground in suitable places. Corridors and routes in the areas are kept free of leaves.

The largest leaves are shredded with a lawnmower in autumn and the leaf layers are kept sufficiently thin.

The soil organisms break down the leaf litter in an environmentally friendly way on the spot. At the same time, the city is saved from transporting leaves to the compost to the waste center.

In the announcement, the city encourages residents to do similar acts of nature with regard to leaves in their own yards.

We also hope for feedback on the city’s experiments, which can be given through the city’s maintenance feedback system or service point.

Soil treatment with the help of tree leaves is part of the biodiversity program of the city of Tampere.
