35 Lappish citizens will be involved in the deliberative public debate at the Forestry Council. Forestry experts will help the panelists by contributing their own forestry knowledge to the debate.
The Natural Resources Institute Finland invites Laplanders to join the Forestry Council.
The Forestry Council will consider different options for the use of Lapland’s forests. Researchers from the Natural Resources Institute Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute will also be involved in the discussion.
An invitation to the Forestry Council has been sent to six thousand randomly selected residents of Lapland, aged between 18 and 80. The 35-member Forest Council will be selected from among those interested and will meet in November.
The Norwegian Natural Resources Agency states in its press release that there are many, sometimes conflicting, expectations associated with the use of forests. Metsäraad is supposed to hold a so-called public debate.
The participants discuss the use of forests in guided small groups and receive information from experts in the field as a basis for the discussion. Based on the discussions, a well-considered, information-based citizen’s view and recommendations to the Lapland Federation on the fair use of forests in Lapland will be drawn up.
Metsäraati is implemented as part of the Climate Actions in puntari – research project funded by the Academy of Finland.
Finland has set its goal to be carbon neutral in 2035. Forests have been seen to have a significant role in achieving the goals.
