Ruska is now at its best in Lapland, but this year the colours are dimmed by a fungal disease on deciduous trees – see how the ruska arrived in Inari

A fungal disease turns the leaves of the trees brownish-purple and the colours do not shine like in the best years. However, in places the blackberry even glows bright red.

Kirsi Ukkonen
Kirsi Ukkonen, a forestry engineer, tells Yle in the morning that most of the deciduous trees are now brown. The Maaruska is particularly beautiful this year.

Once again in autumn, nature is dressed in perhaps its most beautiful colours of the year and offers walkers a real feast for the eyes. Trees and cones alike shine in shades of yellow, orange, red, green and even brown.

This is the best time of the year.

– Most of the deciduous trees are now brown, but it seems that the fungal disease has spread quite widely, so the colours are not quite so bright,” says Ukkonen.

Fungal disease doesn’t kill wood, but it does harm it

According to Kirsi Ukkonen, fungal disease causes the color of the leaves to be impure and mostly brown. Fungal disease spreads especially in places where there are a lot of deciduous trees and, in general, there are favorable opportunities for it to spread.

Ukkonen says that next year the tree’s growth may be weakened due to fungal disease. It also exposes the wood to other diseases and fungi.

– If the fungal disease starts spreading and browning the leaves very early in the summer, they may fall earlier, and it may weaken the growth the following year, says Ukkonen.

The fungal disease can spread from the previous year’s leaves, so there is a high risk that it will be detected next year as well.

The Maaruska shines bright

However, there are also healthy trees in nature. In particular, hardwoods that grow in forests with fewer hardwoods are more likely to remain healthy.

Fungal disease can make brown spots on the leaves.

Maroon is not affected by fungal disease. Even if the colors of the hardwood trees don’t shine brightly, the ground brown can still be stunning.

Ukkonen thinks autumn is very beautiful this time too.

– Maaruska is really handsome at the moment and it’s really pleasing to the eye, even though there are rusty trees around, describes Ukkonen.
