The Queen refused to allow one documentary to be shown, because it got too close to the everyday lives of royals.
The Queen kept her private life strictly off camera, except for a few carefully considered documentaries. However, numerous fictional films and TV series have attempted to portray the life of the British monarch.
We listed some of the documentaries, films and series that paint a picture of the late Queen Elizabeth.
Queen Elizabeth’s life is covered most comprehensively in the streaming service Netflix’s series. The big-budget series describes his life from his rise to the throne until the 1990s.
The drama series deals with the internal conflicts of the royal family and the change of the monarchy in a modernizing society. Although the series tries to depict historical events as accurately as possible, it has also been criticized for distorting the facts.
Movies
The film can be watched on the Elisa Viaplay service.
The King’s Speech received 12 Oscar nominations, of which it was awarded in four categories: best film, director, actor (Colin Firth) and original screenplay.
The film can be watched on the C More service.
The story is loosely based on true events, because the princesses were really involved in the party fun. However, it is highly unlikely that the future queen would have flirted with the pilot and taken him to breakfast in the palace with his parents.
The film can be watched on HBO Max.
Documents
In a recent BBC documentary, we get to see never-before-seen home videos of Queen Elizabeth, which show a different side of the monarch. The videos commented by the queen herself paint a more open and cheerful picture of her than usual. She is seen dancing next to her sister Princess Margaret and fooling around with the royal father.
The documentary, which can be found at Yle Areena, was made as a tribute to the Queen of Britain, who celebrated her 70th birthday earlier this year.
Another BBC documentary was completed just one day after Buckingham Palace announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The documentary commemorating the Queen and her 70-year reign can be viewed at Areena and includes interviews with the royal family, those who worked with her, and public figures.
The life of the late queen is also reviewed in a documentary (2017) found on MTV Katsomo.
In 1969, the documentary film Royal Family was released, where the royal family let the cameras follow the family’s everyday life for the first time. The purpose was to bring the royals, who remain hidden from the public, closer to the people.
The documentary was officially shown for the last time in 1972, after which the Queen forbade it to be shown. Last year, however, the documentary was leaked online.
Humour
The British parody series is a soap opera about the British royal house and the imaginary life and love of its family members. The plot twists of the series made between 2016 and 2020 are fictional, but they are based on real life events.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip do not appear physically in the series, but they are constantly referred to. The series can be seen on Netflix.
Yle will show Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday, September 19, on Yle TV1 and Yle Areena from 12:30 p.m.
