A Swedish thriller film called Abyss was filmed in Tampere in August. The film’s story takes place in Kiruna, Sweden, where years of mining threaten to collapse the entire town.

Events that take place in the film specifically in Kiruna were filmed in the Tampere region. Filming was done, for example, at the Sandvik test mine.

According to Toiviainen, the production company hired professionals from Tampere for the film’s further filming in Kiiruna and the Canary Islands.

The good experiences of the Swedes are also bringing more productions to Tampere. Antti Toiviainen says that next summer the same film company plans to come to the city to shoot a big Swedish TV series.

Tampere pays production support for the film

Approximately 35 Finnish working group representatives and more than 100 assistants were involved in the production of the film. The film’s production budget is around 7.5 million euros.

The budget for the part shot in Tampere is around 1.5 million euros. Of this amount, Business Tampere pays about 25 percent as a production incentive, and Film Tampere, which operates under Business Tampere, about 10 percent, i.e. about 35 percent in total.

The film will premiere in Finland and Sweden in the fall of 2023. An international distribution agreement has also been made for the film.
